Depiction of a legendary hero from 6th-century Syria (Damascus Museum) “ANTAR”
Enamel is glass reduced to powder, colored by metal oxides that generally leave it transparent, but which can make it opaque by adding a certain amount of tin oxide. The art of the enameler consists of making the most of this rich, noble, and durable material, as has been done since the 6th century B.C.
This entirely hand-painted piece required about ten successive firings at 900 degrees.
