In 1978, there were two vacancies of the Apostolic See (Sede Vacante):
- from August 6 to 26, 1978: between the death of Paul VI and the election of John Paul I
- from September 28 to October 16, 1978: between the death of John Paul I and the election of John Paul II.
On both occasions, Cardinal Jean-Marie Villot acted as Camerlengo during this vacancy.
